I’m here today with Gail Little-Osberg! She’s my stager, an interior designer, I love her she’s fantastic. She’s going to give us some tips on how to set your home up so it’ll sell faster.
Gail: The biggest challenge I think for folks, most people….they have too much clutter.
Lisa: Yep, I would agree.
Gail: You live in your home with kids, grandkids, you collect so much and you need to take away all of that extra.
Lisa: Yes, less is more.
Gail: Absolutely. You want to just declutter, get it packed away, I always tell people if they are using you Lisa that they need to do it now because once that sign goes up in their yard, people will be going into your house. And they won’t miss all the stuff.
Lisa: Exactly, pre-packing and they don’t miss it! One of the things that I always tell people and I don’t know if you tell them the same, but it’s that your garage and storage area can look like anything. In today’s healthy and robust market, a garage and storage area can look like anything so pack it all up and store it in there. But the rest of the house needs to look pristine.
Gail: Absolutely. Besides clutter, you want your house clean and sparkled. You might not have a bunch of money, but you can pull out the windex and sparkle it up. And you want to make sure that your furniture placement allows for really great traffic flow. So that when your clients are walking through your house, they’re going to feel like there is a lot of space.
Lisa: What is one more tip to give us in prepping a home to sell?
Gail: I would say to go ahead and paint. You want to be neutral if you can. It doesn’t cost much.
Lisa: Really it just needs to be main level and master suite.
Gail: Exactly, the master suite is huge for people right now. It’s a retreat for people, you want people to feel like they can just relax and breathe. You want to make sure it feels like a hotel…when you’re showing and when you’re having those pictures taken, make it look good.
Lisa: Realistically women are the decision makers on a home…even if it’s a single guy buying there’s a mother, a girlfriend, a fiancee that is tagging along and getting the final say.
Now if a person is staying in their home, what are one or two projects that people could do for a lot of bang for their buck?
Gail: We talked about paint, that’s huge, just freshen up your paint. Right now we’re seeing new trends for 2018 coming out. We’re in the midwest but a lot of the grey colors are still popular, neutrals are great and maybe a pop of color on an accent wall. I think tile work is huge right now. Flooring and tile. A lot of people have gotten away from carpets, they want to do flooring. You have the plank flooring which is great, it goes from your living room into your kitchen and then you can pull that up onto your black splash. Plank is huge, I don’t know if you’re familiar with it, it’s ceramic type flooring planked on a piece of wood. You can get it in varying widths that will actually look like a beautiful wood floor that you can pull into your bathroom, your kitchen, and more.
Lisa: Thanks so much for being with me today Gail, she does awesome design work!
